Harper-Tubman House

Morgan State University

Location Baltimore, MD

Morgan State University and MEDCO retained Design Collective to renovate the existing Harper-Tubman House, the Clara I. Adams College coed honors residence hall. The four-floor residence hall is generally composed of two double rooms sharing a common bathroom and with a central corridor. Harper-Tubman also houses the MSU Office of Residence Life and Housing Central Office. The University and MEDCO wanted to maintain the historical exterior appearance while renovating the building interior with modern systems and finishes. As a result, the scope of work includes selective demolition and reconfiguration of the existing layout, the installation of new MEP, IT, AV and security systems, thorough investigation and upgrading of the building envelope, complete replacement of the interior courtyard and associated stormwater management systems, landscaping refreshment, hardscaping repairs and replacements, and other associated upgrades. It also involves complete interior renovation of bedrooms, study rooms, and the addition of a fitness room, classrooms, and other spaces. The scope of work also includes construction of a new connection between Harper House and Tubman House on the east side of the building that houses a reconfigured building entry and student amenities.
