Marvin Kemp, AIA, CSI, CDT, is a Principal in the Baltimore office of Design Collective, Inc. (DCI). He has been an innovator in architecture for more than 20 years, focusing on new construction and complex renovations principally for the higher education market and including design and construction of life sciences, research and student housing facilities.

Mr. Kemp’s clients in the education sector look to him for excellence in project management, programming, construction documentation and administration for diverse, multi-stakeholder projects.

For the University of Maryland Baltimore, he is leading the design and construction of Health Sciences Facility Phase III. This state-of-the-art biomedical research facility will connect existing facilities of three schools and will share an outdoor living room with adjacent buildings and the rest of the urban campus.

Mr. Kemp managed the development of the Life Science Research Facility at the University of Delaware in Newark. The facility provides space for all aspects of multidisciplinary research in support of the University’s desire to dramatically increase funded research.

He was instrumental in the comprehensive renovations of the Denton Community Quad and the Cambridge Community at the University of Maryland College Park. Renovation of these 1960s-era residence halls enhanced aesthetic and functional quality, improved energy efficiency and upgraded mechanical and electrical systems all with minimal disruption to student life.

Under Mr. Kemp’s leadership, DCI is completing a transformative renovation of a 13-story concrete residence tower at Towson University constructed in 1972. The new facility will meet the demands of today’s students by incorporating upgrades to the exterior envelope and mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment plus a complete interior reconfiguration.

Mr. Kemp is actively involved with DCI’s Education Committee and currently moderates the committee’s Mentor Program.

Active nationally with the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), Mr. Kemp is currently serving on the CSI National Board of Directors and is past president of the Baltimore Chapter. As a member of CSI for over 15 years, he has presented in the Certified Document Technologist (CDT) prep courses at several Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) chapters, at MAR Leadership Orientation Seminars and at CONSTRUCT, CSI’s national convention. He has also presented to the Region One Forum of National Women in Construction (NAWIC) and in Design Collective’s lunchtime seminars known as Design Collective University.

Prior to joining DCI, Mr. Kemp was a Senior Associate at Anshen + Allen Architects. He earned his degree in Architecture from Mississippi State University. He holds licenses to practice architecture in Maryland and Mississippi.
